“We’re deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we’ve shared,” the band announced Friday.
Brent Hinds, guitarist and vocalist, has officially parted ways with Mastodon, the metal band he co-founded in Atlanta in 2000.
The group shared the news on Friday (March 7) via social media, calling the decision mutual.
“Friends and Fans, After 25 monumental years together, Mastodon and Brent Hinds have mutually decided to part ways,” the statement read. “We’re deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we’ve shared, and we wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors. We remain inspired and excited to embark on the next chapter of Mastodon. As we move forward, all 2025 tour plans will remain intact. We look forward to seeing you on the road.”
Until Friday’s announcement, Mastodon’s four-man lineup—Hinds, bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher, and drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor—had remained unchanged since 2001.
Over their career, Mastodon has released nine albums that charted on the Billboard 200, with three reaching the top 10: The Hunter (2011), Once More ‘Round the Sun (2014), and Emperor of Sand (2017). The latter two also claimed the No. 1 spot on the Top Rock Albums chart. Out of six Grammy nominations, the band secured a win for Best Metal Performance with Sultan’s Curse in 2018.
Mastodon is set to perform this weekend at Tool’s Live in the Sand festival in Punta Cana, Mexico, alongside Tool, Primus, Coheed and Cambria, Eagles of Death Metal, and other hard rock acts. Their tour dates extend through August.
