“Plot twist, I’m doing great,” sings Lizzo on her second new song of the year
Lizzo is back with her second new song of the year, the disco-infused track “Still Bad.”
Following her earlier single “Love In Real Life,” which marked her first new music release since contributing to the 2023 Barbie soundtrack, “Still Bad” serves as the second preview of her upcoming fifth studio album, which has yet to be officially dated.
In “Still Bad,” Lizzo emerges stronger after the end of a relationship. “Plot twist, I’m doing great,” she sings in the second verse, over a groovy, bass-driven beat. Later in the song, she declares, “I don’t need him, I need a drink” and sings, “He knocked me down/ I thought I’d never get my fine ass off the ground.” The track’s production, led by regular collaborators Ricky Reed and Blake Slatkin, is sleek, bass-forward, and fittingly groovy.
Along with the release of the song, Lizzo dropped a music video that picks up right where the video for “Love In Real Life” left off. However, the mood shifts when she’s hit with a bucket of blood and begins dancing as the car from the previous video burns in the background. The visual takes on a horror-like tone as chrome-colored humanoids appear in the woods, haunting Lizzo before joining her in a choreographed dance. The video was directed by Collin Tilley. Watch the video below.
Lizzo’s last album was 2022’s Special, which was propelled by the success of the Grammy-winning hit single “About Damn Time.” With the release of “Love In Real Life” and “Still Bad,” Lizzo marks her return to music after facing harassment lawsuits in 2023. Despite briefly contemplating quitting music, Lizzo has now announced that she is “taking a gap year” and her next full-length project is on the horizon.
To celebrate the release of her new single, Lizzo has scheduled a couple of underplay performances in New York City and Minneapolis. See the details of her upcoming shows below and get tickets.
